Through the generosity of donors like you, Joseph and Clara Community Outreach (JCCO) is seeing our efforts transform lives and have a genuine impact on the wellbeing of communities locally and globally.
HEALTH CARE AND MEDICAL OUTREACH INITIATIVES
JCCO is working towards a future where everyone has access to sustainable health care, solutions for prevention, as well as life-changing medications and procedures. In a short period of time, the Foundation has already made great strides.
We started by focusing on eye care in Africa, where serious vision problems are pervasive. In partnership with local doctors and community leaders, JCCO brought a mobile clinics to remote villages in Africa.. To date, this clinic has cared for more than 600 families by giving vision tests, treating eye disease, providing eyeglasses, and screening for diabetes and high blood pressure.
NUTRITION AND FOOD DISTRIBUTION
The COVID-19 outbreak exasperated the already alarming hunger crisis. JCCO teamed up with local churches, food distributers, and leaders to give over 300 families food along with essential toiletries, cleaning supplies, and face masks.
EDUCATION AND CLASSROOM RENOVATIONS
Literacy and access to education help children realize their potential and are key to future success. Our grassroots approach off partnering with local schools, teachers, and education organizations has already made a difference. In 2020, JCCO funded renovations for seven classrooms and playgrounds in the Delta State—empowering students to strengthen both their bodies and their minds. JCCO has paid for tuition for over 100 students in Africa.
Imagine it’s the dry season , and students are sitting in a classroom—with the ceiling unfinished. The scorching sun makes concentration impossible. After a long morning trying to focus in a hot building, the students head outside for recess in an expanse of dirt and dead grass.
Lacking equipment or toys, students toss empty bottles back and forth or find other trash to play with until it’s time to crowd back into the classroom.
This is the reality for too many students in Africa today—a reality JCCF is working to change. We renovate classrooms to create safe, comfortable environments where children can and want to learn. We also upgrade playgrounds so students have a place to play, exercise, build friendships, and enjoy the innocence of childhood..
Blind in both eyes and approaching 70, Mrs. Caroline relied completely on her children and grandchildren to cook for her, bathe her, provide her medications, and run her errands. Every so often, when everyone was occupied with work or school, Mrs. Caroline would be left alone. Wild animals would sometimes eat her food before she could chase them away. This was a devastating loss since her whole family survived on less than $7 a day.
Over time, the daily challenges and lack of independence became too much for Mrs. Caroline. She grew depressed and withdrawn and her future seemed bleak, until her family heard about JCCO’s free community health fair. They took Mrs. Caroline to the outreach, where, in a turn of fortune, she was offered an opportunity to receive cataract surgery at no cost, courtesy of JCCO. After the surgery, the foundation paid for Mrs. Caroline to stay in a hotel to recuperate. With tears in her eyes, she later shared that she never dreamed of sleeping in such a comfortable bed, much less one in a hotel. But the hotel was just a minor gift compared to what came after: For the first time ever, Mrs. Caroline saw her grandchildren’s faces.
JCCO invited 30 child ambassadors from a Nigerian school to come together and speak with our founder Christina via video chat. The students represented various age groups and spoke to the challenges kids face in each grade. During the event, the students played question-and-answer games and even shared a dance routine with Christine. They all received food and a bag of new school supplies—notebooks, pencils, markers, and more.
Before they went home, each student had a chance to make a wish for their school. Some wished for playground equipment and toys for the pre-K students, while others wished for painted walls in their classroom. When the students were done speaking, Christina informed them that JCCO would grant each and every one of their wishes. The burst of joy was instant—and the laughter and delighted screams brought tears to everyone’s eyes.
